There are so many jokes to be made here about Oprah and the French, but that one really is foul. It'll be interesting to see how Oprah responds. As much I hate her, I have to admit it'll probably hurt them a lot more than the no-hairdo hurt her.
You hate Oprah? Pre or Post weight loss? Nevermind...don't answer that.
The French...they are some mean bastages, no doubt about it. But come on...we all have seen "O" without her makeup, it's easy to understand why they may not have recognized her.
I'm thinking that you both missed the point. Persons of color are actively being discriminated against in Paris, not that I'm surprised.
On the other hand, it always amazes me when people say they 'hate' someone, especially a phenomenal philanthropist, motivator and self-made rags-to-riches All-American success story like Oprah Winfrey. How could you possibly hate someone who has given hundreds of millions of dollars to educate your lil' nappy-headed children at HBCU's and other colleges/universities around the country? Sometimes, my own black people make me shake my head in amazement. Put your money where your mouth is and leave Oprah alone!
I don't know exactly how you meant the statement "self-made rags-to-riches All-American success story" but I get real tired of black folk talking about someone being "self made". What exactly does that mean? Does that mean that no one who came before her helped her pave a path that enabled her to be on TV? Does that mean that no one helped her along the way? Let's not be silly. This whole self made idea in my opinion is founded in the same misguided ideology that allows Ward Connerly, Clarence Thomas and the like to shit on black folk. They say that they pulled themselves up by their own boot straps so why can't everyone else. Sorry dawg...no your ass didn't and thank God you didn't have to. All kinds of folks blazed trails that we walk on everyday. Show me someone who lives life by doing everything on their own and I'll show you someone who is a failure in life.
Nobody missed any points, but I think we may have hit a couple of sore spots for some people. So Oprah's a philanthropist. Ok, great, so are lots of other people. Oprah's motivational? Great. Some people say Tony Robbins is too. Point being, it's all just opinion anyway.
I personally think that Oprah is an arrogant, self-centered human being. She's been successful, sure, and I can't and won't knock that, but for those of you who worship at the Church of Oprah, I urge you to sip the kool-aid, don't gulp it. A celebrity figure can certainly be motivational if it's warranted, but there's a limit to everything.
But I won't argue one point. My nappy-headed children will definitely benefit from the millions she donates to HBCU's. No question.
I always make the joke that Oprah is always on TV giving her opinion about things she don't have ie a husband, kids, etc. I'm not a big Oprah fan (FANATIC...those are extra nutz - her audiences scares me) and though I feel that she is a tad misguided, I do respect her and think her heart is in the right place. But hey, being a billionaire has to make you just a little more out of touch with reality no matter how informed you feel you are.
En Francaise...Have you seen Oprah when she ain't got no makeup on and her wig ain't fixed? I might not know who she was either if I hadn't seen her on tv before au naturel. Nevertheless, Oprah or no, Paris or Memphis, folks should be able to get service without having to present their account balances and certified celebrity cards. This is not French attitude, this is the world's view on people of color and the color of money.
