As most of you know, Guru died a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t blog on it because, really, I didn’t have anything to say. Aside from him being the very first artist I ever interviewed — and the first to stand me up — I didn’t have enough of an attachment to him to compel me to put words together on it.
But his death and the aftermath? Yeah, I can talk about that.
If you don’t know the story, I’m not sure I can give an adequate primer, or if I have time to. Long story short — when Guru died, it became clear his production partner, Solar, was running some variety of rouse. Keeping people from seeing Guru in the hospital, effectively excommunicating DJ Premier, all kinds of stuff. The worst was what clearly appeared to be forged “deathbed letter,” so obviously phony that the author repeated phrases in Guru’s letter and Solar’s statement after Guru died. It was like Solar copied someone else’s work, then turned it in verbatim…including the same name on top of the paper.
The only thing I’ll link to is this. Check it out, and I think you’ll think the same thing I was — man, I didn’t ever want to know that much!
I mean, really. Being handed a significant amount of evidence that an emcee is gay is a tad surprising, but nothing out of this world. Finding out there’s evidence to indicate said emcee was getting his ass kicked by his partner? Whoa.
And then said partner was trying to sell his music while he was on his deathbed?
I get it. It’s the information age. However, am I the only person that had zero desire to know that much stuff?
I recognize this isn’t a novel observation, but every time I see a tweet from anyone about Guru and Solar, whether it’s Freddie Foxxx saying “fuck Solar!” and rounding up a posse from all corners of the world to run up on the cat to DJ’s using negative statements about Solar to big up Primo, that’s what runs through my mind.
It’s not like any of this is gonna bring Guru back to life. He’s certainly being done dirty in death, but isn’t that what — and yes, I’m saying this — the law is for? We’ve got evidence of fraud and everything else. Can someone just let them handle it?
I’m sorry, but I don’t want to know about these things. If it’s proven that Guru and Solar were a couple, then it explains everything. If I know nothing else, I know that I don’t want to know anything about anyone else’s relationship. You don’t get any of the good stories. Just the bad.
And really, really weird.
So yeah, if you find out something else about Guru and Solar, please don’t let me know. I already know more than I ever cared to.
